Indian Air Force Trainee Sunil Saharan Turned Tech Founder Secures Y Combinator Spot After Early Startup Failure
Hanumangarh, Rajasthan — In a rare and inspiring turn of events, 27-year-old entrepreneur Sunil Saharan, who once served in the Indian Air Force, has achieved a milestone most startups can only dream of. His technology venture has been selected for the globally renowned Y Combinator Accelerator Program—the same platform that launched companies like Airbnb, Reddit, Instacart, Dropbox, Stripe and Twitch.Sunil’s story is not one of privilege, but of persistence. Originally from a small town in Rajasthan, he joined the Indian Air Force in 2019. However, driven by a burning desire to build something meaningful, he took the unconventional and risky decision to absent from his secure service in 2022 and pursue entrepreneurship.
A Rocky Start: Failure Before Success Sunil launched his first startup, an EdTech platform named UPTOP, hoping to revolutionize learning. But reality struck hard. Despite putting in 16–18 hours daily, seven days a week, the venture failed to attract investors and struggled to survive. Eventually, it had to be shut down completely.
The failure tested him financially and emotionally. Yet, the discipline he learned from the Indian Air Force shaped his mindset:
“A soldier can fall, but he never retreats from the battlefield.”
Rising Strong: A Second Startup With a Stronger Strategy Instead of giving up, Sunil began again from scratch. This time, he focused on solving real business problems with technology and AI automation. For one full year, he repeated the same 16–18 hour work cycle, but with better direction and deeper learning.
The results?
His startup secured large enterprise clients, Achieved consistent growth after three challenging years, and
Ultimately earned an invitation to join Y Combinator, selected from thousands of startups across India.
