Faheem's latest outing came at the Himadari Ice Rink in Dehradun, an international-standard facility that hosted a national IcestockSport tournament featuring squads from Karnataka, Maharashtra, Chandigarh, Gujarat, Goa, Uttarakhand, Delhi and other states. Leading Jammu & Kashmir as captain, Faheem returned home with two gold medals, two silver medals and a bronze — a result that surprised no one who has followed his decade-long career on the ice.
Born in 1992 in Batamaloo, Srinagar, Faheem's introduction to competitive sport had nothing to do with ice. Football, cricket, rugby and athletics filled his childhood, sharpening the reflexes and competitive instinct that would later define his icestock game. It was during a snow rugby event in Gulmarg in 2014 that he first picked up an icestock — handed to him, almost by chance, by Manfred Schafer, then head of the International Federation of IcestockSport. His first throw hit the target. He has barely stopped since.
What followed was over a decade of steady, often unglamorous graft: training on poorly maintained ice, competing with borrowed gear, and traveling to international meets on shoestring budgets, all in a country where winter sports infrastructure remains thin, and in a region where it is thinner still.
The results, however, tell their own story. Faheem has represented India in more than 200 international matches and picked up medals across three continents. A career highlight came at the 2025 World Icestock Championship in Kapfenberg & Stanz, Austria, where he helped India to a team bronze medal and a fourth-place finish in Team Long Distance, lifting India to a Top-7 world ranking in the Team Game category — one of the strongest results posted by an Indian side at that level.
Away from the rink, Faheem has built an equally serious second career. He holds a degree in Computer Engineering and a master's degree in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, has worked as a programmer and certified UX designer, and is an independent researcher with contributions to published research. Few of his rivals on the ice, in India or abroad, carry a resume quite like it.
Yet those who know him say it is his work off the rink that matters most to him. Through the Vaadi E Kashmir Foundation, Faheem is involved in youth development, digital literacy and community sports programmes across the Valley, and is a familiar sight coaching children on makeshift rinks after his own competitions wrap up. Kids in Gulmarg and Srinagar follow his results closely; for many, he has become proof that a path exists — even from a region with little winter sports tradition and even less support.
"We're not that far behind," Faheem has said of India's standing in the sport. "We just need people to believe in us."
With the Dehradun tournament now added to an already long list of national titles, Faheem's ambitions have not slowed. The European Championships are next on his calendar, with Olympic qualification the ultimate target — a goal he has framed not as a personal milestone, but as a message to "every kid who thinks they can't make it because they're from Kashmir."

खगोलविद अमर पाल सिंह ने बताया कि उल्काओं को देखने के लिए किसी भी विशेष दूरबीन या टेलीस्कोप एवं विनाकुलर आदि आवश्यक उपकरण की भी आवश्यकता नहीं है आपको केवल साधारण आंखों से ही पर्सियस तारामंडल की दिशा में देखने के साथ ही संपूर्ण आकाश का अवलोकन करना होगा और वास्तव में व्यापक आकाश को देखने के लिए नंगी आंखें अधिक उपयोगी होती हैं। इसीलिए किसी खुले और अपेक्षाकृत घने अंधेरे स्थान से आकाश का बड़ा हिस्सा दिखाई देने पर अनुभव बेहतर रहेगा। शहरों में कृत्रिम प्रकाश एवं प्रकाश प्रदूषण के कारण बहुत सी मंद उल्काएँ दिखाई नहीं दे पाएंगी, इसीलिए यह उल्का वृष्टि का विहंगम दृश्य ग्रामीण इलाकों में ज़्यादा बेहतर परिणाम देगा लेकिन ध्यान रहे कि मौसम साफ़ होना चाहिए।

The results, however, tell their own story. Faheem has represented India in more than 200 international matches and picked up medals across three continents. A career highlight came at the 2025 World Icestock Championship in Kapfenberg & Stanz, Austria, where he helped India to a team bronze medal and a fourth-place finish in Team Long Distance, lifting India to a Top-7 world ranking in the Team Game category — one of the strongest results posted by an Indian side at that level.
Away from the rink, Faheem has built an equally serious second career. He holds a degree in Computer Engineering and a master's degree in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science, has worked as a programmer and certified UX designer, and is an independent researcher with contributions to published research. Few of his rivals on the ice, in India or abroad, carry a resume quite like it.
Yet those who know him say it is his work off the rink that matters most to him. Through the Vaadi E Kashmir Foundation, Faheem is involved in youth development, digital literacy and community sports programmes across the Valley, and is a familiar sight coaching children on makeshift rinks after his own competitions wrap up. Kids in Gulmarg and Srinagar follow his results closely; for many, he has become proof that a path exists — even from a region with little winter sports tradition and even less support.
"We're not that far behind," Faheem has said of India's standing in the sport. "We just need people to believe in us."
With the Dehradun tournament now added to an already long list of national titles, Faheem's ambitions have not slowed. The European Championships are next on his calendar, with Olympic qualification the ultimate target — a goal he has framed not as a personal milestone, but as a message to "every kid who thinks they can't make it because they're from Kashmir."

खगोलविद अमर पाल सिंह ने बताया कि अगस्त 2026 का पूरा महीना ही खगोल प्रेमियों के लिए बड़ा ही मनमोहत खगोलीय दृश्यों से भरा हुआ है क्योंकि भारत में भी दिखाई देंगे तेज और चमकीली उल्का वृष्टि, क्योंकि इस दिन चंद्रमा की रोशनी नहीं डालेगी खलल, अंधेरे आसमान में बेहतर रहेगा नजारा। खगोलविद अमर पाल सिंह ने बताया कि अगस्त के महीने में रात के आकाश में होने वाली सबसे लोकप्रिय खगोलीय घटनाओं में शामिल पर्सीड उल्का वर्षा (Perseid Meteor Shower) इस समय सक्रिय है,खगोलविद अमर पाल सिंह ने बताया कि वैसे तो उल्का-वर्षा कैलेंडर के अनुसार पर्सीड उल्का वर्षा 17 जुलाई से 24 अगस्त 2026 तक सक्रिय रहेगी और इसका अधिकतम गतिविधि काल भारतीय समयानुसार लगभग 12/13 अगस्त की दरम्यानी रात विशेषकर आधी रात के बाद और भोर से पहले का समय, भारत में इसे देखने के लिए महत्वपूर्ण रहेगा।
  

  
 *भारत में क्यों खास होगा 2026 का पर्सीड उल्का वर्षा ?* 
  

  
खगोलविद अमर पाल सिंह ने बताया कि अगस्त 2026 में पर्सीड उल्का वर्षा के अवलोकन के लिए एक महत्वपूर्ण अनुकूलता यह है कि इसका अधिकतम काल अमावस्या के आसपास पड़ रहा है। इसका अर्थ है कि रात के आकाश में चंद्रमा की तेज रोशनी उल्काओं की चमक को दबाने में बड़ी बाधा नहीं बनेगी। इसलिए शहरों से दूर, कम प्रकाश-प्रदूषण वाले स्थानों से इस वर्ष, पर्सीड उल्का वर्षा का अवलोकन अपेक्षाकृत बेहतर रहने की संभावना है। 
  

  
 *कितनी उल्का प्रति घंटे दिखाई दे सकती हैं।* 
  

  
खगोलविद अमर पाल सिंह ने बताया कि अगस्त 2026 के पर्सीड के लिए लगभग 60 से 100 उल्का प्रति घंटा के आदर्श (ZHR) शीर्षबिंदु प्रति घंटा दर और अमावस्या के कारण अनुकूल परिस्थितियों में दिखाई दे सकती हैं, हालांकि, इसका अर्थ यह नहीं है कि भारत में किसी भी व्यक्ति को हर घंटे 100 उल्काएँ दिखाई देंगी। ZHR (Zenithal Hourly Rate) शीर्षबिंदु प्रति घंटा दर एक मानकीकृत सैद्धांतिक दर है, जो आदर्श अंधेरे आकाश, उपयुक्त रेडिएंट ऊंचाई और अनुकूल पर्यवेक्षण परिस्थितियों में अनुमानित उल्का दर को दर्शाती है। वास्तविक संख्या मौसम, प्रकाश प्रदूषण, क्षितिज की स्थिति, रेडिएंट की ऊंचाई और पर्यवेक्षक की दृष्टि जैसे अनेक कारकों पर निर्भर करती है। खगोलविद अमर पाल सिंह ने बताया कि यहां एक महत्वपूर्ण वैज्ञानिक अंतर समझना जरूरी है कि उल्का वृष्टि मॉडल कैलेंडर के अनुसार अगस्त 2026 के लिए सुरक्षित आदर्श परिस्थितियों में पर्सीड की दर लगभग 100 उल्का प्रति घंटा के आसपास हो सकती है।
  

  
 *क्या है पर्सीड उल्का वर्षा?* 
  

  
खगोलविद अमर पाल सिंह ने बताया कि पर्सीड उल्का वर्षा वास्तव में अंतरिक्ष में किसी एक स्थान से निकलने वाली आग की कोई धार नहीं है बल्कि यह पृथ्वी के सूर्य की परिक्रमा करते समय धूमकेतु (109P/Swift-Tuttle) /स्विफ्ट टटल द्वारा पीछे छोड़े गए धूल और छोटे चट्टानी कणों के प्रवाह से होकर गुजरने के कारण दिखाई देने वाली वार्षिक उल्का वर्षा है,जब ये छोटे कण पृथ्वी के वायुमंडल में अत्यधिक गति से प्रवेश करते हैं, तो वायुमंडल के साथ उनकी परस्पर घर्षण क्रिया से उनके आसपास की गैस आयनित और उत्तेजित होती है तथा आकाश में चमकदार प्रकाश-पथ दिखाई देता है। इन्हीं चमकदार घटनाओं को हम उल्का या आम बोलचाल की भाषा में टूटते हुए तारे भी कहते हैं। खगोलविद अमर पाल सिंह के अनुसार पर्सीड उल्काओं की औसत प्रवेश गति लगभग 59 किलोमीटर प्रति सेकंड है।
  

  
 *कौन है इस पर्सीड उल्का वृष्टि का जनक धूमकेतु।* 
  

  
खगोलविद अमर पाल सिंह ने बताया कि पर्सीड उल्का वृष्टि का स्रोत (109P/Swift-Tuttle) /स्विफ्ट टटल धूमकेतु है,इस धूमकेतु की कक्षीय अवधि लगभग 130 वर्ष है। धूमकेतु की सूर्य के आसपास यात्रा के दौरान छोड़े गए कण उसकी कक्षा के आसपास एक मलबा-धारा बनाते हैं। पृथ्वी हर वर्ष जुलाई-अगस्त में इस धारा के क्षेत्र से गुजरती है और इसी कारण पर्सीड उल्का वर्षा दिखाई देती है।
  

  
 *पर्सीड उल्का वृष्टि का रेडिएंट किस तारामण्डल तारामंडल में होगा।* 
  

  
खगोलविद अमर पाल सिंह ने बताया कि पर्सीड उल्काओं का रेडिएंट (Radiant) पर्सियस तारामंडल की दिशा में स्थित दिखाई देता है। रेडिएंट का मतलब होता है उल्का विकीर्णक बिंदु लेकिन केवल कोई भी रेडिएंट वह वास्तविक स्थान नहीं होता है जहां से उल्काएँ निकल रही होती हैं। यह केवल पृथ्वी से देखने पर उनका परिप्रेक्ष्य प्रभाव है। अंतरिक्ष में उल्का-कण लगभग समानांतर पथों पर वायुमंडल की ओर आते हैं, लेकिन दृष्टि-रेखाओं के कारण वे आकाश में एक ही क्षेत्र से आती हुई प्रतीत होती हैं। इसे ही रेडिएंट पॉइंट कहा जाता है।
  

  
 *भारत में कब और कैसे देखें?* 
  

  
खगोलविद अमर पाल सिंह ने बताया कि भारत में पर्सीड देखने का सबसे महत्वपूर्ण अवसर 12 अगस्त की रात से 13 अगस्त की भोर के बीच ही रहेगा लेकिन उसके बाद 13 अगस्त की रात से 14 अगस्त की भोर में भी कुछ उल्काएं देख सकते हैं इसलिए भारतीय पर्यवेक्षकों के लिए अधिकतम के आसपास की यह रातें अधिक उपयोगी रहेंगी।
   *कैसे और आकाश की किस दिशा में देखें।* 
  

  
खगोलविद अमर पाल सिंह ने बताया कि उल्काओं को देखने के लिए किसी भी विशेष दूरबीन या टेलीस्कोप एवं विनाकुलर आदि आवश्यक उपकरण की भी आवश्यकता नहीं है आपको केवल साधारण आंखों से ही पर्सियस तारामंडल की दिशा में देखने के साथ ही संपूर्ण आकाश का अवलोकन करना होगा और वास्तव में व्यापक आकाश को देखने के लिए नंगी आंखें अधिक उपयोगी होती हैं। इसीलिए किसी खुले और अपेक्षाकृत घने अंधेरे स्थान से आकाश का बड़ा हिस्सा दिखाई देने पर अनुभव बेहतर रहेगा। शहरों में कृत्रिम प्रकाश एवं प्रकाश प्रदूषण के कारण बहुत सी मंद उल्काएँ दिखाई नहीं दे पाएंगी, इसीलिए यह उल्का वृष्टि का विहंगम दृश्य ग्रामीण इलाकों में ज़्यादा बेहतर परिणाम देगा लेकिन ध्यान रहे कि मौसम साफ़ होना चाहिए। 
  

  
 *सबसे अच्छा समय एवं किस दिशा में होगा पर्सीड उल्का-वर्षा और क्यों पड़ा इसका नाम पर्सिड्स उल्का वर्षा।* 
  
  
 खगोलविद अमर पाल सिंह ने बताया कि इस शानदार उल्का वृष्टि को देखने के लिए 12–13 अगस्त 2026 की दरम्यानी रात में सबसे अच्छा समय भारतीय समयानुसार रात लगभग 12 बजे से सुबह 4:30 बजे तक होगा साथ ही उत्तर-पूर्व दिशा की ओर देखें जहां पर पर्सियस तारामंडल दिखाई देगा,यह उत्तरी आकाश में स्थित है, और यह भी जानना आवश्यक है कि उल्काओं की इस बौछार को पर्सिड्स इसलिए कहा जाता है क्योंकि आसमान में ये सभी उल्काएं पर्सियस तारामंडल की दिशा से आती हुई प्रतीत होती हैं।
  

  
 *क्या केवल पर्सियस तारामंडल की ओर देखना चाहिए ?* 
  

  
खगोलविद अमर पाल सिंह ने बताया कि यह एक सामान्य गलतफहमी है। यद्यपि पर्सीड का रेडिएंट पर्सियस तारामण्डल में मौजूद है, लेकिन उल्काएँ आकाश के विभिन्न हिस्सों में दिखाई दे सकती हैं। यदि पर्यवेक्षक केवल रेडिएंट के बिल्कुल पास देखेगा तो उल्काओं की लकीरें अपेक्षाकृत छोटी दिखाई दे सकती हैं। इसलिए खुले आकाश में व्यापक दृष्टि-क्षेत्र रखना अधिक उपयोगी है।
  

  
 *पर्सीड उल्का चमकीली और तेज उल्काओं के लिए क्यों हैं प्रसिद्ध ।* 
  

  
खगोलविद अमर पाल सिंह ने बताया कि पर्सीड को दुनिया की सबसे लोकप्रिय वार्षिक उल्का वर्षाओं में गिना जाता है। अमर पाल सिंह के अनुसार इनके उल्का अक्सर तेज और चमकीले होते हैं तथा कुछ उल्काएँ लंबे प्रकाश-पथ भी छोड़ सकती हैं। इसी कारण पर्सीड को सामान्य पर्यवेक्षकों और खगोल प्रेमियों एवं विज्ञान के विद्यार्थियों आदि के लिए आकर्षक उल्का वर्षा माना जाता है।
   *क्या हर साल गतिविधि बिल्कुल समान रहती है?* 
  

  
खगोलविद अमर पाल सिंह ने बताया कि उल्का वर्षा की गतिविधि वर्ष-दर-वर्ष बदल सकती है। पृथ्वी धूमकेतु द्वारा छोड़े गए मलबे के अलग-अलग घनत्व वाले क्षेत्रों से गुजर सकती है। इसके ऐतिहासिक विश्लेषण के अनुसार 2016 में पर्सीड में उल्लेखनीय वृद्धि देखी गई थी, जिसका संबंध अलग-अलग घने धूल-पथों से गुजरने से था। इसके अलावा 2018, 2020 और 2021 में मुख्य अधिकतम के लगभग 0.7 से 1.5 दिन बाद अतिरिक्त उच्च गतिविधि रिपोर्ट की गई थी। हालांकि 2022 से 2024 के दौरान ऐसी समान गतिविधि नहीं देखी गई। इसलिए 2016 या 2021 जैसी गतिविधि को 2026 में विशेष खगोलीय परिस्थितियों में किसी ख़ास स्थान से दोहराए जाने की संभावना हो भी सकती है।
   *2026 में खगोल वैज्ञानिकों की नजर क्यों रहेगी?* 
  

  
खगोलविद अमर पाल सिंह ने बताया कि पर्सीड केवल मनोरंजन या आकाशीय दृश्य नहीं है बल्कि उल्का बरसातों का अध्ययन खगोल वैज्ञानिकों को धूमकेतुओं द्वारा छोड़े गए पदार्थ, पृथ्वी के निकट अंतरिक्ष में धूल-कणों के वितरण और पृथ्वी के वायुमंडल के साथ छोटे अंतरिक्षीय कणों की परस्पर क्रिया को समझने में सहायता करता है। उल्का वर्षाओं का व्यवस्थित अवलोकन अंतरिक्ष पर्यावरण के अध्ययन में भी उपयोगी होता है।
  

  
 *भारत के लिए क्या है ख़ास।* 
  

  
खगोलविद अमर पाल सिंह ने बताया कि भारत में अगस्त 2026 का पर्सीड प्रदर्शन देखने का सबसे अच्छा अवसर अगस्त की 12/13 की दरम्यानी रात में ही रहेगा और साथ ही थोड़ा सा कम लेकिन दृश्य तौर पर 13/14 की रातों में भी रहेगा। विशेष रूप से आधी रात के बाद से भोर तक का समय व्यावहारिक रूप से बेहतर रहेगा, क्योंकि उस समय पर्सियस का रेडिएंट अधिक ऊंचाई पर पहुंचता है और आकाश का बड़ा हिस्सा उल्का गतिविधि के लिए अनुकूल होता है। वास्तविक संख्या मौसम और स्थानीय प्रकाश प्रदूषण पर निर्भर करेगी।
  *क्या होती है उल्का-वृष्टि और उल्का पिंड।* 
  

  
खगोलविद अमर पाल सिंह ने बताया कि सौर मंडल के ग्रहों के बीच के अंतरिक्ष में पत्थर और लोहे एवं अन्य मटेरियल्स युक्त अनगिनत छोटे-बड़े कंकड या कण मौजद होते हैं। ऐसा कोई कण जब तीव्र वेग से पृथ्वी के वायुमंडल में उतरकर क्षण भर के लिए चमक उठता है, तब वह 'उल्का' या 'टूटता तारा' कहलाता है। ये कण  लगभग 70 किलोमीटर प्रति सेकंड के वेग से वायुमंडल में उतरते हैं और धरातल से करीब 100 किलोमीटर ऊपर वायुमंडल के अणु-परमाणुओं के साथ घिसकर उद्दीप्त हो उठते हैं, लेकिन अंतरिक्ष से आने वाले धातु या पत्थर के जो बड़े पिंड पृथ्वी के वायुमंडल को पार करके पृथ्वी के धरातल पर पहुंच जाते हैं वे
  
 'उल्कापिंड' कहलाते हैं।
  

  
 *कितने प्रकार की होती हैं उल्काएं।* 
  

  
खगोलविद अमर पाल सिंह ने बताया कि उल्काओं के मुख्यतः दो प्रकार हैं, पहला है विरल उल्काएं और दूसरे को उल्का-वृष्टि कहा जाता है,जो उल्काएं एक-दूसरे से स्वतंत्र होती हैं और आकाश में भी लगभग वर्षभर नजर आती हैं, वे विरल उल्काएं कहलाती हैं। भिन्न-भिन्न दिनों और ऋतुओं में इनकी संख्या भी घटती-बढ़ती रहती है। ऐसी उल्काएं मध्यरात्रि के पहले कम और मध्यरात्रि के बाद ज्यादा संख्या में दिखाई देती हैं। शरद ऋतु की अपेक्षा ग्रीष्म में इनकी संख्या कम रहती है। अब अगर हम बात करें दोनों प्रकार की उल्का की तो पाते हैं कि इनका संबंध धूमकेतुओं से है,धूमकेतु धूलिकणों और बर्फ बनी गैसों के पिंड होते हैं। ये लंबी दीर्घवृत्ताकार कक्षाओं में सूर्य की परिक्रमा करते रहते हैं। इनसे निकले हुए कण इनकी कक्षाओं में चक्कर लगाते रहते हैं। जब पृथ्वी किसी धूमकेतु के यात्रापथ से गुजरती है, तब धूमकेतु के वे कण वायुमंडल में उतरकर उल्काओं के रूप में चमक उठते हैं और तब आकश में हमें उल्का-वृष्टि का आकर्षक नजारा दिखाई देता है।
  

  
 *क्या होता है उल्का विकीर्णक-बिंदु और इसको क्यों  जानना आवश्यक होता है।* 
  

  
खगोलविद अमर पाल सिंह ने बताया कि अगर उल्का-वृष्टि को तारों के मानचित्र पर रेखांकित करके उन्हें पीछे की ओर ले जाया जाए, तो पता चलता है कि सभी 'टूटते तारे' आकाश के लगभग एक ही स्थान से निकलते नजर आते आयेंगे,आकाश के उस स्थान या बिंदु को खगोल विज्ञान की भाषा में 'उल्का विकीर्णक-बिंदु' कहते हैं। उल्का-विकीर्णक-बिंदु जिस तारा-मंडल में होता है, उसी का नाम उस उल्का-वृष्टि को दिया जाता है, जैसे अगस्त में होने वाली उल्का वृष्टि को पर्सिड्स उल्का बौछार कहा जाता है क्योंकि नामकरण भी उसी तारामंडल के अनुसार किया जाता है जिस तरफ़ से इनका रेडियंट पॉइंट होता है इसीलिए इसका नाम 'पर्सीयस' (Perseus) तारामंडल के नाम पर रखा गया है क्योंकि ये उल्काएं उसी दिशा से आती हुई प्रतीत होती हैं,लेकिन यह भी ध्यान में रखना जरूरी है कि किसी तारा-मंडल के एक बिंदु से उल्काओं के विकीर्णन का यह नजारा महज एक दृष्टिभ्रम ही होता है। पहली बात तो यही है कि तारे हमसे बहुत-बहुत दूर हैं, परंतु उल्काएं करीब 100-120 किलोमीटर ऊपर ही वायुमंडल में पहुंचकर उद्दीप्त हो उठती हैं। दूसरी बात यह है कि उल्काएं वास्तव में समांतर पथों में ही धरातल की ओर आती हैं, दोनों रेल-पटरियों की तरह। परंतु पटरियों को दूर तक देखने पर वे जैसी एक-दूसरे के साथ मिल जाती हैं, उसी प्रकार हमें आभास होता है कि उल्काओं की वृष्टि भी आकाश के लगभग एक स्थान से हो रही है,खगोलविद अमर पाल सिंह ने बताया कि लेकिन खगोल-विज्ञान में दिलचस्पी रखने वालों को प्रकाश प्रदूषण एवं मौसम साफ़ होने पर ख़ास कर के ग्रामीण इलाकों से तो इन उल्का-वृष्टियों को अवश्य ही देखना चाहिए और गिनती भी करनी चाहिए कि एक घंटे में आकाश से कितने 'तारे टूटते हैं'।
  

  
 *उल्का वृष्टि में पृथ्वी की कक्षा का क्या महत्ब है।* 
  

  
खगोलविद अमर पाल सिंह ने बताया कि उल्कावृष्टि का संबंध धूमकेतुओं से है। धूमकेतु धूलिकणों और बर्फ बनी गैसों के पिंड होते हैं। ये लंबी दीर्घवृत्ताकार कक्षाओं में सूर्य की परिक्रमा करते रहते हैं। इनसे निकले हुए कण इनकी कक्षाओं में चक्कर लगाते रहते हैं। पृथ्वी जब किसी धूमकेतु की कक्षा से गुजरती है, तो 'उल्कावृष्टि' का भव्य नजारा देखने को मिलता है। उल्काएं-हमारे सौर-मंडल में ग्रह, उपग्रह और धूमकेतुओं के अतिरिक्त ऐसे असंख्य छोटे-बड़े पत्थर और लौह-टुकड़े हैं जो दीर्घवृत्ताकार मार्ग में सूर्य का चक्कर लगाते रहते हैं। इनमें अधिकांश तो मटर के दाने से बड़े नहीं हैं, परंतु कुछ इतने विशाल हैं कि टनों में भी तौले जा सकते हैं, तमाम उल्का प्रतिदिन हमारी पृथ्वी के वायुमंडल में चले आते हैं लेकिन सोचिए यदि हमारी पृथ्वी पर वायुमंडल न होता तो क्या होता। ये सब पृथ्वी के धरातल पर आ टकराते, लेकिन पृथ्वी के वायुमंडल में पहुंचकर ये उल्का-पत्थर संघर्षण के कारण 'टूटते तारे' की तरह चमक उठते हैं और इनमें अधिकांश पृथ्वी के धरातल पर पहुंचने के पहले ही नष्ट हो जाते हैं, लेकिन कभी-कभी ये इतने बडे होते हैं कि वायुमंडल में पूर्ण रूप से समाप्त नहीं होते और पृथ्वी पर आ टकराते हैं। ऐसे उल्का-पत्थरों से भारी नुकसान होता है। कितने ही उल्का-पत्थर तो हजारों टन वजन के होते हैं। ऐसा ही एक उल्का-पत्थर जून 1908 में साइबेरिया (रूस) में गिरा था। साइबेरिया के इस उल्कापात के फलस्वरूप 70 मील व्यास के घेरे में सब-कुछ जलकर राख हो गया था। जिस जगह पर यह उल्का पत्थर गिरा था, वहां से 50 मील दूर के गांवों में एक भी मकान नहीं बचा था। अनेक वर्ष पूर्व ऐसा ही एक प्रचंड उल्कापात दक्षिण अमेरिका के एरिजोना प्रदेश में हुआ था। आज भी उसका 500 फीट गहरा तथा 4,000 फीट व्यास का खड्डा मौजूद है। ऐसा ही उल्का पिंड हमारे भारत में भी गिर चुका है जिसका नाम लोनार क्रेटर है जिसके कारण काफ़ी बड़ी झील बनी है जोकि महाराष्ट्र के बुलढाना जिले में स्थित है या कुछ यूं कहें कि महाराष्ट्र के बुलढाणा जिले में स्थित लोनार झील लगभग 50,000 वर्ष पहले अंतरिक्ष से गिरे एक तीव्र गति वाले उल्कापिंड के प्रभाव से बनी थी एवं इसका व्यास लगभग 1.2 किलोमीटर है जोकि आज एक राष्ट्रीय भूवैज्ञानिक स्मारक घोषित है और यह भी जानना आवश्यक है कि यह बेसाल्ट चट्टान में बनी दुनिया की एकमात्र और एक खारी व सोडायुक्त (अल्कलाइन) अनोखी क्रेटर झील भी है।
  

  
 *सबसे अधिक उल्काएं किस महीने में दिखाई देते हैं।* 
  

  
खगोलविद अमर पाल सिंह ने बताया सबसे अधिक 'टूटते तारे' आपको अगस्त के महीने में दिखाई देंगे। इसका कारण यह है कि इस महीने में पृथ्वी उस पथ को पार करती है जिस पर किसी समय बड़े पुराने जमाने में एक विशाल महा दानव धूमकेतु चला करता था और जहां उसके तमाम टुकड़े अब भी घूमते रहते हैं, इस मार्ग को हम उल्का पथ कहते हैं। किंतु उल्काएं केवल अगस्त में ही नहीं दिखाई देतीं हैं, बल्कि आदर्श परिस्थितियों में किसी भी रात को प्रति घंटे आपको कई उल्काएं दिखाई दे सकती हैं,परंतु 12 अगस्त तथा 16 नवंबर के दिन ये अधिक तादाद में दिखाई देती हैं। जब पृथ्वी किसी उल्का-पथ से गुजरती है तो बड़ी संख्या में ये पृथ्वी के वायुमंडल में घुस आती हैं। ऐसे समय इनकी 'वर्षा' देखने लायक होती है।
   *क्या होता है उल्का वृष्टि का खगोलीय गणित और कैसे पता चलता है कि कितनी गति से वायुमंडल से टकरायेंगे उल्का।* 
  

  
खगोलविद अमर पाल सिंह ने समझाया कि मान लीजिए कि कोई उल्का 20 किलो मीटर प्रति सेकंड की गति से पृथ्वी की ओर आ रही है तो पृथ्वी भी प्रति सेकंड 30 किलो मीटर की गति से उसकी ओर जा रही होगी। इसलिए उल्का-प्रस्तर का जो घर्षण पृथ्वी के वायुमंडल से होगा वह 20 + 30= 50 किलो मीटर प्रति सेकंड के हिसाब से होगा। क्योंकि इस प्रकार पृथ्वी की सूर्य-परिक्रमा गति के कारण, जो 30 किलो मीटर प्रति सेकंड की है, उल्काओं की गति और भी अधिक हो जाती है। परंतु जो उल्काएं पृथ्वी की ही दिशा में चलती हैं, वे इतनी वेगवान नहीं मालूम होतीं, क्योंकि उनकी गति में से पृथ्वी की गति घटा देनी पड़ती है। 
  

  
 *क्यों दिखाई देती हैं रंग बिरंगी उल्काएं।* 
  

  
खगोलविद अमर पाल सिंह ने बताया कि उल्काएं (टूटे हुए तारे) रंग-बिरंगी इसलिए दिखाई देती हैं क्योंकि अंतरिक्ष से आने वाली चट्टानें जब तेज गति से वायुमंडल में प्रवेश करती हैं, तो घर्षण से अत्यधिक गर्मी पैदा होती है। इससे उनका और हवा का तापमान बढ़ जाता है और चट्टान के अंदर मौजूद विभिन्न तत्वों और हवा की गैसों के वाष्पीकरण से विशिष्ट रंग उत्सर्जित होते हैं,जैसे सोडियम से पीला,मैग्नीशियम से नीला-हरा और आयरन से पीला-सफेद एवं कैल्शियम से बैंगनी रंग और नाइट्रोजन और ऑक्सीजन (वायुमंडल की गैसों के कारण) लाल या नीला रंग चमकता है।

खगोलविद अमर पाल सिंह के अनुसार पर्सीड 17 जुलाई से 24 अगस्त तक सक्रिय रहेगी हालांकि 12 अगस्त 2026 की रात्रि को अधिकतम होगी जोकि लगभग 59 किमी/सेकंड की गति वाले उल्काओं वाली और 109P/Swift-Tuttle धूमकेतु से उत्पन्न वार्षिक उल्का वर्षा है इसीलिए आप शहर की रोशनी से दूर किसी अति महत्वपूर्ण एवं पूर्णतः सुरक्षित,साफ़ स्वच्छ एवं संपूर्ण सावधानी पूर्वक ही किसी भी अंधेरे स्थान का चयन करें और आसमान में चमकती उल्काओं का अद्भुत नजारा देखें क्योंकि इसको किसी भी प्रकार की टेलिस्कोप्स/ दूरबीनों की कोई भी जरूरत नहीं है , इसीलिए खगोलविद अमर पाल सिंह कहते हैं कि भारत के आसमान में अगस्त की इन रातों में दिखने वाली हर चमकती लकीर केवल ‘टूटता तारा’ नहीं, बल्कि अरबों किलोमीटर दूर से आए अनजाने खगोलीय मेहमानों की तरह ही ब्रह्मांडीय बस्ती के धूमकेतु एवं उनके द्वारा छोड़े हुए पदार्थ का पृथ्वी के वायुमंडल से हुआ एक क्षणिक वैज्ञानिक संवाद होगी जिसे आप देखने के साथ ही अनंत अंतरिक्ष एवं समय के कालजयी पिटारे का ज्ञानार्जन भी कर सकते हैं।
