Buoyant Chennaiyin FC lock horns with upbeat Odisha FC in a challenging away trip

Sports News

KKNB: Odisha FC will kick-start their Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 campaign at home against former champions Chennaiyin FC at the Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar on Saturday, September 14, at 5:00 pm.

Odisha FC have a superb record against Chennaiyin FC at home in the ISL, winning all of their three home meetings against the Marina Machans. Contrastingly, Chennaiyin FC had a middling start to the campaign last year, winning twice and losing thrice in their first five games and would want to get on a strong footing right from the onset in the current campaign.

Sergio Lobera has been an ISL veteran, ever since coming to India in 2017. He joined Odisha FC last season and made an instant impact. Under the Spanish tactician’s leadership, they reached the ISL semi-finals for the first time, whilst also reaching the Super Cup final.

“This is my sixth season in India and with every season the difficulty keeps on rising. Every year the teams are getting stronger, the league is improving, more foreign players are coming and the level of Indian players is also improving a lot. I feel this will be another amazing season with many strong teams and we hope to compete very well against them,” Lobera told ISL.

Odisha FC goalkeeper Amrinder Singh opened up on the team’s approach towards the season, saying, “Our focus will be on our style of play, on how we want to go about our offensive and defensive game-plans. It’s football, eventually one team will play better than the other, but we are an attacking side and we will like to maintain that game-plan.”

Sports

ISL 2024-25 Media Day: “Trophies in the past don’t matter; you are only as good as your last game”, says NorthEast United FC head coach Juan Pedro Benali

KKNB: The Indian Super League (ISL) 2024-25 Media Day began in Kolkata with representatives from seven clubs, i.e. Mohun Bagan Super Giant, East Bengal FC, Mohammedan SC, Odisha FC, Jamshedpur FC, Punjab FC and NorthEast United FC previewing the upcoming season.

The event saw a blend of new and familiar faces, with Mohun Bagan's Jose Molina and Punjab FC's Panagiotis Dilmperis making their ISL debuts as head coaches, while veterans like Sergio Lobera, Khalid Jamil, Juan Pedro Benali, and Carles Cuadrat discussed their strategies for the campaign.

The discussions, however, began with the newly-promoted Mohammedan SC head coach Andrey Chernyshov expressing his pleasure at joining the ISL, with his captain Samad Ali Mallick underlining their ambitions to challenge for the playoffs straightaway.

“It’s a nice feeling to be a part of the ISL family. We did a great job last year by winning the I-League. I am thrilled about our supporters. They had been expecting this for many years. I can’t wait to get started with the league,” Chernyshov said.

The two other Kolkata heavyweights are on their desired track ahead of the coming ISL campaign. Whilst the Mariners embark on the coveted title defence, East Bengal FC are bolstered by solid reinforcements to their squad in the summer.

“It’s a process to prepare the team for the ISL. We have been working together for a month and there are still a few things to improve upon. We are confident in our players and the way we have trained until now,” Jose Molina said.

East Bengal FC tactician Cuadrat overlooked comparisons from their sluggish start last year to insist confidently that his team will hit the ground running from their opening fixture this time around.

“It’s a different season with different players, and hence I wouldn’t like to compare to the last campaign, because every team is in a different situation as they were last time around. We have the complete squad with us and we will have to be competitive from day one,” Cuadrat said.

Lobera eyes ISL title with Odisha FC

Odisha FC, who finished fourth last season, are basking on their storied run across multiple competitions in 2023-24 to produce similarly impressive outings this year too.

“It’s been six years in India for me now. We had an amazing season last year, finishing at the top of the group in the AFC Cup. We were close to winning the Super Cup and we reached the ISL semi-finals for the first time in the club’s history. It was an amazing run and we want to replicate that this year to put a smile on the faces of the fans,” Lobera said.

 Challengers for the playoffs spots

The trio of Punjab FC, NorthEast United, and Jamshedpur FC had ignited an exciting late challenge for the playoffs last season, falling short at the final hurdle. Since then, the Highlanders have gone from strength to strength, winning the club’s first trophy with the Durand Cup last month.

“We are now starting to realise with what we did in the Durand Cup! But, now, we look forward to the ISL and there’s another story that’s waiting for us in the coming season. Trophies in the past don’t make you play better. You are only as good as your last game,” Benali mentioned.

Jamshedpur FC’s Khalid Jamil praised the ISL for bringing in new rules, such as the introduction of the concussion substitute, mandating an AFC Pro License holding (or equivalent) Indian assistant coach, amongst others. Considering that he is one of the two Indian head coaches in the ISL along with Thangboi Singto of Hyderabad FC, Jamil said, “These new rules will help in the development of Indian football. We shall study it in detail and see how they could help us benefit during the course of the season as well.”

For Punjab FC, they have a new coach at helm in Greek tactician Panagiotis Dilmperis. The team has made some smart acquisitions in the transfer window and Dimperis expressed satisfaction at the same, whereas skipper Luka Majcen stressed upon the importance of a positive start.

“I am really lucky with all the players we have got in the Punjab FC roster. They are all great personalities and our aim is to achieve greater heights than we did last year,” Dimperis said.

Defrauded Investors Urge Authorities to Act Against NSEL Brokers

Thousands of Investors Still Waiting for Justice Years After NSEL CrisisNew Delhi,

Thousands of investors who lost their hard-earned money due to the fallout of the National Spot Exchange Limited (NSEL) crisis are still waiting for justice and the return of their funds. Their prolonged wait is eroding trust in the system. The crisis, which began over a decade ago, involved brokers misleading investors with false promises of safe and assured returns, leaving them in financial turmoil. Despite clear court directives and the stringent provisions of the MPID Act, many brokers have yet to face the necessary legal action, and justice continues to be delayed.

The National Spot Exchange Limited (NSEL) case stems from a payment default that occurred in 2013. The crisis was triggered when the Forward Markets Commission (FMC), the commodities market regulator, directed NSEL to halt the launch of new contracts, leading to the abrupt closure of the Exchange in July 2013. This event marked the beginning of a major financial crisis, leaving thousands of investors facing significant losses and sparking ongoing legal battles to recover the funds.

The NSEL provided a platform for buyers and sellers to trade in commodities, involving clients, traders, and investors registered through their respective brokers. These brokers, in turn, were registered on the NSEL exchange. However, investigations have revealed that brokers exploited this system, engaging in fraudulent activities that defrauded thousands of investors.

The investigation uncovered several key findings that highlight the fraudulent activities of the brokers involved in the NSEL crisis. Brokers took Power of Attorney from their clients and executed trades on the NSEL on their behalf. They misrepresented NSEL contracts as fixed return products, luring traders into investments with promises of risk-free returns. Furthermore, brokers funded their clients beyond their repayment capacity and conducted trades without proper authority, sometimes using clients' names and PAN details for benami transactions. To conceal these illicit activities, brokers also engaged in rampant client code modifications.

Courts have ruled that brokers are to be considered as financial institutions under the Maharashtra Protection of Interest of Depositors (MPID) Act. The Court also upheld the attachment of assets, including bank accounts and properties, under this Act. This decision reinforces the legal framework aimed at protecting investors' interests and recovering their lost funds, providing renewed hope for justice to the thousands of affected investors. However, authorities have yet to take the necessary actions to implement this ruling effectively.

In March 2015, the Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of Mumbai Police arrested directors of three major brokerage firms. By December 2018, these brokers and their directors were charge-sheeted under various charges, including being declared Financial Establishments under the MPID Act. In December 2022, the EOW filed a final charge sheet against 16 additional brokers and their directors.

Despite these actions, significant delays in attaching the brokers' assets have frustrated investors. The MPID Act allows for the attachment of properties of entities declared as Financial Establishments to protect depositors' interests. However, the assets of brokers who accepted deposits from investors and failed to repay them remain largely unattached.

In May 2023, the MPID Court ordered the attachment of properties belonging to one prominent broker. However, authorities have only attached a fraction of the required assets. The High Court upheld the MPID Court's directive, emphasizing that inaction should not hinder the attachment process.

Investors, frustrated by the lack of progress, have taken legal action to expedite the attachment of assets. An application filed by an investor led to a court hearing where the Competent Authority confirmed that brokers had induced investors with false promises of guaranteed returns. The court ordered the attachment of properties, but significant progress is still lacking.

Public Outcry and Social Media Campaign:

The ongoing delays and perceived favoritism towards certain brokers have sparked a public outcry. A social media campaign under the hashtag has gained momentum, demanding swift justice and accountability. Prominent figures and social media influencers have joined the call for justice, amplifying the voices of affected investors.

Thousands of investors are still waiting for justice years after the NSEL crisis. They were promised safe returns by their brokers but are left empty-handed.

The NSEL crisis has left a lasting impact on investor confidence and financial stability. As the call for justice grows louder, it is imperative for the concerned authorities to act promptly. Investors are demanding that the government attach the assets of all brokers involved, ensure accountability, and restore public faith in the financial system.

*ISL 2024-25 Media Day*
